What IS ‘LIP BLUSHING’? INSIDE THE LATEST COSMETIC TREND

The world of cosmetic technology is nothing if not innovative. Hence, it comes as no surprise that after years of fuller pouts stealing the limelight and lip fillers becoming synonymous with self-care, the industry has reinvented one of its oldest procedures: lip tattooing.

That being said, today’s take on lip blushing, often called ‘lip blushing’, is nothing like the stark lip liner tattoos of years past. In fact, it’s arguably a procedure that can not only correct the lip’s colour, but can actually enhance its shape and size with natural-looking results that last for much longer than fillers.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ‘LIP BLUSHING’?

Like microblading, ‘lip blushing’ is a semi-permanent form of tattoo makeup that gives the lips added colour and a fuller appearance. Where in the past, the treatment used carbon-based tattoo ink, resulting in harsh lines that aged to bluish tones (not ideal), today’s lip blushing is a whole different species. “Lip Blushing or ‘Lip Tint Tattooing’ is a more topical and natural approach to the traditional lip tattooing of the past. [Nowadays] natural shades of organic pigment are used in your desired colour and applied using a cosmetic tattoo machine,” explains Amy Jean. Prior to the procedure, a topical anaesthetic is applied to ensure client comfort, after which the aesthetician will draw the shape of the ‘new’ lips so you can discuss and make any changes. In order to achieve the optimum ‘blush’ effect, two appointments are typically necessary, Amy Jean adds. “Two appointments are required, generally four to eight weeks apart. The first appointment is very conservative then the artist and client can agree on any changes during the ‘perfecting’ visit,” she says.

HOW LONG DOES LIP BLUSHING LAST FOR AND WHAT DOES IT COST?

When it comes to results, lip blushing delivers on multiple fronts, including shape, colour and size. “[Results include] full, symmetrical and waterproof lips in your preferred shade. Your artist can address any concerning issues such as asymmetry or add width to thinning or concave lips,” Amy Jean explains. “You can also opt for a stronger outline with graduated colour, eventually fading out into the centre of the lips to give the illusion of more fullness.” Overall, the end effect is that of a fuller, more luscious pout, eliminating the need for lip makeup altogether. “You won’t need to apply lip liners or lipstick after your tattooing, simply use a clear gloss or paw paw ointment,” Amy Jean says. She also noted that most people can get three to five years of definition out of the treatment, depending on their skin type and skincare ingredients. Other elements that can cause results to vary from person to person include health and lifestyle factors, such as smoking, sun exposure, iron deficiency, oiliness and exfoliation, all of which could speed up the fading process.

HOW DO YOU WORK OUT WHAT COLOUR IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Given the semi-permanent nature of the procedure, it’s important to carefully consider your colour with your aesthetician, and avoid any hues that will look dated in a few months time. “Seasonal or ‘trend’ shades are a big no,” . “We generally discuss the clients preferred shades and weigh this up against their skin tone, hair colour and how dramatic their daily makeup application is. Always tread carefully and choose natural hues.”

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE HEALING PROCESS AND WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

As with all procedures, it’s important to be aware of all possible risks and after-effects before proceeding. In terms of the healing process, we emphasise that the lips will appear rich in colour and quite solid for two to three days after the treatment. However, the hue will eventually settle down as the skin sheds the outer layer and the softer colour emerges beneath it. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LIP BLUSHING TECHNICIAN

It’s important to go into a technician’s clinic armed with knowledge and the right questions to ask. Always find out how long they’ve been practicing cosmetic tattooing and look at recent reviews and multiple ‘before and after’ photos from their clinic to ensure consistency and cohesion in their work. For your own safety, it is well worth consulting your general practitioner or dermatologist with any questions you have before proceeding. This is your blog post, great looking images make your blog posts more visually compelling for your audience, so choose media that really wows.
